Why Calories Matter
To stay at a healthy weight, the energy you consume through food and drink should roughly match the energy you burn throughout the day.
- Eat more than you burn? Your body stores the extra as fat.
- Burn more than you eat? Your body starts using stored fat for energy – that’s where healthy weight loss begins.
How Many Calories Do I Need?
As a general guide:
- Men need about 2,500 kcal per day
- Women need about 2,000 kcal per day
But if you’re trying to lose weight in a sustainable and realistic way, many people aim for around:
- 1,900 kcal per day for men
- 1,400 kcal per day for women
This can vary depending on your age, activity levels, health conditions and metabolism. Our Weighless Wonders coaches will help you personalise this during our Transform Your Health programme, or you can get a quick idea using the NutraVerse app, which adjusts your target based on your profile.
How Many Calories Per Meal to Lose Weight?
Once you have an idea of your daily calorie needs, breaking it down by meals can help you stay on track – without needing to count everything.
Women (based on approx. 1,400 kcal/day):
- Breakfast: 280 kcal
- Lunch: 420 kcal
- Dinner: 420 kcal
- Snacks & drinks: 280 kcal
Men (based on approx. 1,900 kcal/day):
- Breakfast: 380 kcal
- Lunch: 570 kcal
- Dinner: 570 kcal
- Snacks & drinks: 380 kcal
You don’t need to hit these numbers exactly every day – just use them as a flexible guide. Life is for living, and it’s all about progress, not perfection.
Tips for Calorie Awareness
You don’t have to become a numbers expert – just a bit of awareness can go a long way.
✅ Check food labels – Look under the “Energy” section for kcal
✅ Use the NutraVerse app to scan barcodes and quickly understand food quality and calorie info
✅ Meal plan ahead – It saves time, money, and helps you make better choices
✅ Be mindful when eating out – Lots of Irish cafés now list calorie info, especially chains
✅ Get moving daily – A short walk, home workout, or even housework all adds up
Balanced Eating = Better Energy
Rather than only focusing on calories, we encourage a balanced plate:
- Loads of veg and fruit
- Wholegrains like brown bread, oats, or spuds with skins
- Lean proteins like eggs, chicken, beans, or lentils
- Healthy fats from olive oil, seeds or avocados
- And hydration – aim for 6 to 8 cups of water or herbal tea a day
We also teach you how to make smart swaps at Weighless Wonders – like replacing sugary yoghurts with natural ones, or swapping creamy sauces for tomato-based ones. Over time, small changes add up.
